We are continuing to evolve. Wollongong Central recently celebrated the completion of a refurbishment of the North (formerly known as Crown) building. Customers and retailers can now benefit from upgraded amenities and a revitalised interior including new furniture.
The new design not only recognises Wollongong's proud history, but also its exciting future. The inspiration for the design and the palette of materials used throughout the Centre was inspired by the local community’s diverse beach culture and Wollongong’s proud industrial heritage. Many of the organic forms used throughout the Centre reflect the geographical highlights of the city’s location within the escarpment, the beautiful beaches and the Illawarra’s spectacular geography.
Did you know…
An innovative approach to lighting was undertaken to create an ambient atmosphere rather than the retail norm of brightly lit common spaces. At every point, warm pools of light of differing intensities have been crafted to create drama, highlight floor textures and to create a more comfortable environment for visitors and staff.
The columns proudly feature reclaimed recycled telegraph poles from the area between Muswellbrook and Wollongong. Other columns throughout the Centre were stripped back to their original concrete finish, revealing workmen’s original pencil marks from the Centre’s initial construction.
The Bluestone pavers on the floor of the entries highlight the local stone that was once quarried in the Illawarra region.
The overall shape of the ceiling was inspired by the soft gentle organic forms found throughout Wollongong’s spectacular coastline.
The food court ceiling was inspired by Wollongong’s beautiful beaches. The ceiling feature is a play on integrating a manmade material with the soft forms of sand dunes and waves in the beach. The softness and rhythm of the blades also allude to the contours of the topography of the surrounding area.
