Bill and Tory, a couple from the Northern suburbs, contacted SAHSSI with regards to a granny flat they wanted to lease to a woman in need. Bill and Tory said that they often go for walks along the foreshore and come across people who are homeless. On one of these walks they saw a lady sleeping in her car that looked like she had been there for a while. It made them stop and think how they could help someone who is experiencing homelessness.
When their granny flat become vacant, Bill and Tory researched organisations they could get in contact with to potentially offer their granny flat for lease. After reading about SAHSSI Tory contacted SAHSSI as she too was a domestic violence survivor from a previous relationship.
SAHSSI met with Bill and Tory to view the property and discuss options moving forward with safety and other strategies to put in place. SAHSSI approached clients that we felt were most suitable and would want to view the property and meet the landlord. Our client Gail had been staying in our crisis accommodation after recently leaving a 20 year long term emotionally violent relationship. Gail was stripped of her confidence and self esteem.
She met the landlords, loved the environment and the property.
The match was successful and SAHSSI continued to case manage the tenancy with great results.
Testimonial from the landlords;
“In the end the lady that chose to live there fits us and we fit her, we can see her changing and getting her self confidence back.”
“The biggest concern we feel for single older women after having many empathetic conversations is definitely social isolation. If a women is living so isolated and with no money that there is a big risk of them going back to what they know, not necessarily what is safe for them. We wanted to provide not only an affordable opportunity but one where Gail felt safe and surrounded by people who care.”
Gail has been there for over 12 months now and is still very happy.
