Sustainability at Wollongong Central

Here at Wollongong Central, we’ve committed to making positive and significant changes to the way we operate and develop, placing strong emphasis on our water, waste and energy use.

Our focus has been to drive and implement innovative environmental measures and systems that both enhance performance and minimise our impact on the environment.

Environmentally Responsible Design

Wollongong Central was recognised for its environmental effort and was awarded a 5 Star Green Star rating on the $200 million development in 2016. This award cemented Wollongong Central as one of Australia’s most sustainable retail developments and was the first shopping centre to achieve this rating.

The rating represents ‘Australian excellence’ in sustainable construction, according to the Green Building Council of Australia.  One key element that was recognised in the Wollongong Central development was its innovative passive design which reduces energy use.

Examples of this include the use of a large skylight to reduce the need for artificial lighting and the large food court façade awning which can be opened or closed automatically according to the weather conditions.

GPT Group Development Manager Mohan Rengaswamy said sustainable design was a cultural pillar of the organisation which has already reduced the carbon emissions intensity of its operations by more than 50 per cent on 2005 levels.
“We have challenged what is viable by reviewing attitudes and behaviours towards how places are used and also how we should operate our business" says Rengaswamy.

Commitment to the Wollongong Community

At Wollongong Central we place enormous value on supporting our customers and the local Wollongong community. We operate community programs that fall under 3 pillars: healthy living, employability & skilling and social inclusion. We consider Wollongong Central to be a part of the Wollongong community fabric, and we strive to find ways to support and grow our community.

Our Wollongong Central team continues to find ways to support local employment and local business growth. An example of this is our  “Local Breaks for Local Business” community-based initiative. This program offers local Wollongong businesses the opportunity to trade in the centre as a pop-up retailer, for a short-term period at a reduced rate. This initiative is a great way for local businesses to test the waters to make sales, and provide insights on their advancement opportunities while expanding their customer base.

Electric Car Charging Stations

At Wollongong Central we proudly offer free-to-use Electric Car Charging Stations, with both Tesla Chargers and EVE Chargers (suitable for most electric car models). Located on the Basement Car Park in the Keira Building, we hope to welcome you there soon.
